Sermon audio genesis 474/4/2024 This is a fulfillment of the covenant in Gen 12:1-3, where Abraham was told that his descendants will be blessed in order to bless the nations around them. This was the man God called, and chose to use.īut what did Jacob do for Pharaoh in Gen 47:7,10? Jacob blessed Pharaoh. In his later years, his beloved wife, Rachel, died, and his son Joseph was sold by his other sons. They were mass murderers and sinned greatly. He had many sons no doubt, but his sons grieved him. Subsequently, he was exploited by his father-in-law and was the object of a conflict between his two wives. Who was he? Jacob was a liar and deceiver who tricked his brother out of his birthright and blessing, and had to run away from his family because his brother wanted to kill him as a result. In the previous chapters, we have covered the events in Jacob's life. He describes it as "few and evil" in verse 9b. Notice how Jacob describes his life in verse 9. Joseph brings his father to Pharaoh and they start off with pleasantries (Gen 47:7-8). (B) God’s wonderful plan to bless (Gen 47:7-12) In all our moments of blessings, it is not because we worked to achieve them, but this God of Jacob and Joseph worked to bring about all things. Yet for so many of us, we have received so much. We could not choose our families or even some of our lot in life. What does this mean for us today? It humbles us when we realise how helpless we are. Looking back at the twists and turns of the previous chapters, we really see how God's sovereignty works out His perfect plans in ways we cannot imagine. If we pause and consider everything, it is not hard for us to see that God had a plan of provision. They have profited through the goodwill obtained through work of their brother and received blessing through a savior, though they did nothing at all. Jacob's sons were murderers and liars, and now they now have everything thanks to Pharaoh, through Joseph. What a far cry from their bankrupt, penniless and desperate state that caused them to move from a foreign land! And yet, they did nothing to merit these which they received. Though foreigners, they have royal employment and land thanks to Pharaoh. He also puts them in charge of his livestock. What does Pharaoh do specifically for his entire family? In Gen 47:5-6, Pharaoh gives them the best of the and allows them to dwell in the land of Goshen. It was because of a severe famine in the land of Canaan that they had to make the move (v.4). In the opening verses of Gen 47, Joseph's entire family moves out of Canaan into Goshen, which is part of Egypt, under the rule of Pharaoh (Gen 47:1). Gen 46 then breaks into a side story about Jacob’s encounter with God. What has happened thus far? Joseph reconciles with his brothers in Gen 45 and invites them to come join him. Why should we die before your eyes? For our money is gone." 16 And Joseph answered, "Give your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock, if your money is gone." 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the herds, and the donkeys.(A) God’s wonderful plan to provide (Gen 47:1-6) 15 And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us food. And Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. 14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain that they bought. 12 And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their dependents.ġ3 Now there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished by reason of the famine. 11 Then Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning." 10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many are the days of the years of your life?" 9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojourning are 130 years. Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father and stood him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
